About the Artist(s) and/or Entry: Mike Renard is a Ukrainian artist who expresses his thoughts with bronze. He is best known for his hybrid cast bronze sculptures that represent aesthetic and thematic duality, using the medium’s inherent dimensionality to purposefully challenge his sculptures’ perceptive identity. Mike Renard’s sculptures contain two distinct entities that magically transform into one, manifesting the skillful utilization of bronze to create a social commentary with a poetic approach, seeing bronze as “the material of eternity.” The focus of Renard’s work is on contemplating and exploring various themes based upon the relationship between two portrayed entities, showing a juxtaposed depiction of diverse life forms to purposefully lead the viewer to a realization that interdependency and diversity are essential to all life. His sculptures have also gained much attention because of his use of detail and intricacy, which attracts the viewer closer to the sculpture’s surface to appreciate its realistically detailed elegance. “The duplicitous, double-sidedness and Dual-Faced Bilateralism, as I like to say, helps reveal the meaning of the sculpture.” The idea of his sculptural depiction of the “CraBird” (2016) came to Mike Renard when he found a fragment of a crab claw on a beach and realized how similar it was to the bird's beak. In this sculptural work he combines two creatures from remote worlds to show the immaculate harmony of nature, one in the air the other from the sea. Mike Renard revealed that his inspiration comes mostly from mundane flows he finds in urban and natural environments. Nature’s ceaseless marvels allow him to discover uncharted territories of the human being, revealing animalistic urges of survival that permeate our consciousness. Mike Renard’s arresting visual lexicon, invitingly welcomes visitors into a public space where people, especially children, will engage with the artist’s bronze sculpture and share a whimsical experience that brings forth and contemplates nature’s equilibrium. Art has been part of Mike Renard’s life since early childhood. He started attending art school at the age of ten when sculpture captivated his interest. His talents were recognized early in his life and he planned to attend the Ukrainian Art Academy upon completion of his studies at the Odessa Art School, but unfortunately he needed to postpone his creative passion to support his family. Renard focused all of his efforts on becoming a successful “man of the universe” businessman, eventually building a successful Agriculture and Energy Trading company. Twenty years later, shortly after Ukraine experienced a transformation of its own cultural identity, Mike Renard reflected upon his life and decided to return to his inherent passion to sculpt. He studied, became a full-fledged apprentice in 2015, and learned from skilled artisans to further expand his sculptural vision. In 2016 Renard opened up his own foundry in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he assembled a team of professional molders, casters and chiselers and began to focus his creative energy on his life-long passion. Renard’s sculptures are a reflection of his own life. He has always perceived himself as having two lives with two different vantage points that could only be understood when viewed, like his sculptures, from its surrounding perspectives. One view, which came from his experiences in business, portrays him being pragmatic and rational, and the other side creatively delves into a more metaphysical sense of being. Renard relates to both experiences and incorporates them into a single, unique sculptural expression with two vantage points that deliver a profound underlying message that nature can only exist in harmony with all other living things. In doing so, he concocts beauty with fright, death with greed, or joy with desire, letting narratives bleed into one another and form intertwined tales of the zeitgeist. Renard explains it as, “It is the other side that creates the mystery and intrigue that excites interest, and evokes the answer for what the sculptor wanted to say and express.” Renard’s seamless transitions across various surfaces encapsulate kinetic incarnations of his ideas that challenge the mediocre, prompting viewers to veer away from their everyday paths. He finds inspiration in beauty and composure, as well as collapse and despair that prevail our contemporary landscape, in disparate corners of the universe, which the human condition duplicates”. Mobility is equally crucial for viewers of his arresting bronze sculptures, which reveal their complete identities only after a full journey encompasses them. “It is the other side that creates the mystery and intrigue that excites interest, and evokes the answer for what the sculptor wanted to say and express,” he explains. Mike Renard’s hybrids of animals, tools, or crops are otherworldly creations of the familiar, charged with cultural and historic discourses of his subjects orchestrated into single bodies. He concocts beauty with fright, death with greed, or joy with desire, letting narratives bleed into one another and form intertwined tales of the zeitgeist. Within their dense bronze bodies, they contain the dualities and harmonies embedded in our mundane experiences. His sculptures—either a piggy bank morphing into a skull, with alarming teeth or a nozzle-headed serpent whose intricate scales reminisce textures on soil—find their best embodiment in bronze, a textural medium which helps the artist convey the characteristics of his subjects with equal resilience and grace. “I like to touch bronze and feel the cold and heavy metal,” admits the artist about his physical relationship to this material. Elevating his medium’s tactile density is Mike Renard’s connection to nature, a source which continuously yields stories through its unending wonders and formations. Take, for example, CraBird (2016), a medley of a bird and crab, two animals of remote worlds—skies and seas—contributing to the immaculate harmony of nature, in which living beings, whether an avian, amphibian or human, survive through interdependency. Nature’s ceaseless marvels allow him to discover uncharted territories of the human, revealing animalistic urges of survival and victory that permeate our consciousness. In Don’t Miss (2016), an owl, whose cautiously piercing eyes and voluptuously curved beak gleam in bronze, molds into a boxing glove, a symbol of precision, timeliness and gain, in addition to violence. The most lucid juxtaposition of humanity through nature, however, is La Piovra (2014), an octopus of seven sprawling legs spread out with grace and volume. The Italian title’s dual meaning for octopus and corruption amplifies the work's homage to Christianity’s “seven deadly sins,” one of which is greed. The octopus’ suffocating tentacles, with suckers masterfully rendered in bronze, carry the horrors and consequences of excess desire for more. Also used in the vernacular to define corruption, cabbage humorously accentuates the sea creature’s head, adding farce and urgency to the artist’s social commentary, while presenting the artist an opportunity to experiment with bronze’s ability to capture fluidity and elegance through the vegetable’s leaves. Each sculpture’s swift transformation between two subjects—or, what Mike Renard calls “Dual Bilateralism”—stems from his skillful use of sketching, molding and casting, a sequence of processes that blossoms from a moment of inspiration leading to the final bronze sculpture. Whether on a beach in California or his foundry in Ukraine, inspiration finds Mike Renard within his astonishing encounters, either marveling him with wonders of nature or flaws of the humankind. Buyer is required to schedule an appointment with Pak Mail to release all items purchased. 

Some pieces will require the artist to also be present to assist with disassembly, however Pak Mail must also be present to verify the payment has been received and that all pieces are released to proper buyer.

Sales Subject to Approval

  • All items selling through the auction process on this auction are SUBJECT TO APPROVAL OF HIGH BID BY THE ARTIST.
  • The artist who has elected to sell their artwork through this auction site will have the right to accept (or decline) the final high bid at the end of the auction.   
  • Artists are required to either accept or decline the highest bid no later than TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2021 @ 5:00 PM ET.
  • The person who is highest bidder at the end of the auction will be notified by the auction company when the artist has reviewed and either accepted or declined highest bid.

Payments in full are due by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2021.

No item sold through this auction site will be released until payment in full is received. 

Removal Times / Failure to Remove

APPOINTMENT WITH PAK MAIL FOR REMOVAL IS REQUIRED.  THIS IS PUT IN PLACE FOR PROTECTION OF ALL PARTIES.  PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.


No art will be released to buyer prior to 10/6/2021. 

Removal will be In compliance with request by ArtPrize to protect the art pieces that have sold during removal process. Buyers and artists have a vested interest in these magnificent pieces of work.

PAK MAIL (premier partner) is the only authorized agent and logistics company that is approved to remove any items sold from this auction site from the displayed location.  

Miedema Auctioneering will provide the winning bidder name and phone # to Pak Mail. 

Artist or buyer are not permitted to remove art pieces that are sold themselves.

PAK MAIL exclusively will remove and release to the buyer. 

This is in place for protection of the precious art pieces as well as convenience for the artist and buyer.  

  • Buyer will be required to schedule an appointment with PAK MAIL for removal.  Call 616-649-3439 to schedule appointment for removal. 
  • Fees for removal and or shipping will be paid by the buyer directly to Pak Mail.  These fees will not be reflected on the invoice for the purchase of art. Art Prize will set the price for removal.
  • Appointments must be scheduled with PAK MAIL by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2021.  This does not mean that all removals will be completed by that date, rather that the appointment for a date is required to be scheduled by October 8, 2021.  This allows four (4) business days after auction/sale is final day for buyer to make arrangements for removal.  
  • Final deadline for actual removal may vary by venue.    The appointment dates and times per venue will be available to you within your account.

SUMMARY:

  • All art entries that are sold through this auction platform will be removed from their displayed location by a representative of the Pak Mail store that has partnered with ArtPrize.  The buyer or artists may not remove the entry (exceptions may apply).  Pak Mail must be present to assure the piece is released to the buyer (or representative) and that the payment has been received.
  • There will be a minimum handling fee payable directly to Pak Mail for the removal. (See Below for Fees)
  • Contact the designated Pak Mail store at 616-649-3439 or email: PakMailOpsGR@gmail.com to make arrangements for removal and payment of handling fee.
  • Buyer may elect to employ Pak Mail to package and ship on their behalf as well if desired.  That arrangement, payment and agreement will be directly between buyer and Pak Mail.
  • Buyer may elect to employ any packaging and shipping source of their choice, however Pak Mail is the only option to be present for the transfer of the piece from display to buyer. Handling fee will still be payable to Pak Mail for that removal.
  • Pak Mail will require a signature and a proof of ID from the buyer or person picking up on behalf of buyer.

Sales Tax

State of Michigan sales tax rate of 6% will be added to the final winning bid plus the buyer's premium amount.  


If you are claiming exemption from sales tax for any reason, please complete a Michigan Sales Tax Exemption Form from within your online account on this auction site AFTER YOU ARE THE WINNING BIDDER.  Follow steps below to complete:

3. Select TAX EXEMPTION CLAIMS from left menu

4. Complete the form

5. Click on INVOICES on the left menu bar, view the invoice and then select option to CLAIM EXEMPTION


If you complete an electronic tax exemption claim this will not automatically remove sales tax from your invoice.  You will need to complete step 5 above to remove the sales tax. 

Special Notes

Pak Mail of Grand Rapids is the authorized service for releasing art that has been sold through this auction site from it's displayed location.  Pak Mail will verify that the payment for purchase has been received and that the piece is released to the proper buyer (or representative).

All art that is purchased through this auction site is required to be released by Pak Mail.   

Buyer may not remove themselves, they are required to schedule an appointment for removal with Pak Mail: 616-649-3439.

Miedema Auctioneering will provide Pak Mail with the winning bidders name and phone #.

1. using a standard 48x40 pallet size as reference, anything capable of being placed on a pallet and packaged safely (read as properly contained) on said pallet

3. paintings (or "flat" wall-style art) up to 10' in length and 6' height

Posted Closing Times

Posted closing times and displays of Auction Co.'s current time are approximate. Auction Co. reserves the right to close early or extend auctions at any time at its discretion. It is strongly recommended that bids be placed early to avoid losing out due to an ill-timed, last minute bid. All times based on Eastern Standard Time. Dynamic bidding - The dynamic bid on this website is a feature that does NOT allow an item to sell at the end of the auction until there is 10 minutes of bidding inactivity. Example - An item is bid on at 7:50pm. An auction is scheduled to close at 8:00pm. When this bid is placed the ending time will automatically extend to 8:10pm. When another bid is placed at 8:01 the auction will extend until 8:20pm. This will give bidder 19 minutes to place another bid. If no bids are placed this auction will conclude at 8:20pm. The key to your dynamic bidding feature is that the auction extends from the preset closing time in 10 minute intervals, NOT 10 minutes from when you placed your bid.

When another bid is placed at 6:01 the item will extend until 6:10 pm. This will give bidders additional time to place another bid. If no further bids are placed on this item it will conclude and close at 6:10 pm. The key to our dynamic bidding feature is that the auction extends from the preset closing time in FIVE (5) minute intervals, NOT five (5) minutes from when you placed your bid. 

Incremental Bidding

A bid may be placed for any amount equal to or greater than the current required bid amount, which means your bid amount is not required to be an increment of the posted bid increment.

Example:

  • Current bid at $10.00 with a bid increment of $5.00.
  • Minimum bid required would be $15.00.
  • A bid may be placed for any amount equal to or greater than $15.00.
  • The bid amount is not required to be in increments of $5.00; therefore a bid could be placed for $17.00 or $76.00 or whatever amount you wish to bid as long as it is equal to or greater than the minimum bid required.
  • The winning bid may end up at any amount. It may not be divisible by the stated increment. The winning bid will be the highest

Automatic Bidding (max bid, auto bid, proxybid)

Automatic Bidding (auto bid) option makes bidding convenient allowing you to enter the maximum bid amount* that you are willing to bid on an item. Based on your Account Preferences for notification, you may be notified whenever your auto bid increases &/or when it is exceeded.

The auction company or other bidders do not have access to see your auto bid amount. You are the only person that can see your auto bid amount (displayed in your Watch List).

Your auto bid will not “jump” to the maximum amount. The auto bid will increment up only with competing bids until either the item completes with you as the high bidder, or until your auto bid has been exceeded by another bid.

If another bidder already has an auto bid in place when you place your auto bid, the (2) competing auto bids will continue to increment until either the lower auto bid is maxed out; or if both auto bid amounts are the same the auto bid that was placed first will become winning position of the bid.

Example #1:

1. Minimum bid is at $10.00 with a $5.00 bid increment.

2. Bidder #1 places an auto bid for $77.00.

3. No other auto bids are in place, therefore Bidder #1 is high bidder at $10.00.

4. Bidder #2 places an auto bid for $23.00.

5. Bids would compete with each other as follows:

 Bidder #1 - $10

 Bidder #2 - $15

 Bidder #1 - $20

 Bidder #2 - $23 (maximum auto bid placed)

 Bidder #1 - $25 (high bid position)

The high bid is $25 not $28 because Bidder #2’s auto bid was exceeded at an increment other than $5.

Example #2:

1. Minimum bid is $10.00 with a $5.00 bid increment.

2. Bidder #1 places an auto bid of $77.00.

3. No other auto bids are in place, therefore Bidder #1 is high bidder at $10.00

4. Bidder #2 places an auto bid for $25.00

5. Bids would compete with each other as follows:

 Bidder #1 - $10

 Bidder #2 - $15

 Bidder #1 - $20

 Bidder #2 - $25 (maximum auto bid placed)

 Bidder #1 - $30 (high bid position)

The high bid is $30 because Bidder #2’s auto bid was exceeded at an increment equal to $5.

Example #3:

1. Minimum bid is $10.00 with a $5.00 bid increment.

2. Bidder #1 places an auto bid of $25.00.

3. No other auto bids are in place, therefore Bidder #1 is high bidder at $10.00

4. Bidder #2 places an auto bid for $25.00 (same amount as Bidder #1 auto bid)

5. Bids would compete with each other as follows:

 Bidder #1 - $10

 Bidder #2 - $15

 Bidder #1 - $20

 Bidder #2 - $25

 Bidder #1 - $25 (high bid position)

The high bid is $25 with Bidder #1 in high bid position because Bidder #1 placed the $25.00 auto bid before Bidder #2.
